The question sounds almost rhetorical. Of course you can teach critical thinking—humans do it all the time. We train students to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, recognize bias. Surely we can do the same with AI systems that process millions of texts and learn from billions of parameters?

The answer is more complicated: partially, with effort, but not universally emergent.

Critical thinking in LLMs is possible. But it doesn’t arise naturally from scale. It requires dedicated training approaches, and even then, the results are narrower than human-like skepticism. Here’s what actually works, what doesn’t, and why the distinction matters.

What Critical Thinking Requires

For humans, critical thinking means several cognitive operations:

  • Metacognition: Monitoring your own reasoning process
  • Error recognition: Noticing when you’ve made a mistake
  • Self-correction: Revising conclusions when evidence changes
  • Task decomposition: Breaking complex problems into manageable parts
  • Knowledge boundary awareness: Knowing what you don’t know

Can transformers do these things? The evidence says: some, sometimes, with the right training.

The Emergent vs Trainable Divide

Here’s the surprising finding from 2025 research: large reasoning models (GPT-o1, DeepSeek-R1) develop metacognitive abilities through reinforcement learning—but only when explicitly incentivized.

Studies show that when you reward models for generating long chains of reasoning and penalize incorrect final answers, they spontaneously develop error-checking behaviors. They backtrack when stuck. They verify intermediate steps. They decompose problems. This looks like genuine metacognition.

But—and this is crucial—these abilities are task-specific and model-specific. The same architecture without reasoning-focused RL doesn’t show these behaviors. And even with RL, metacognition applies narrowly: excellent for math problems, inconsistent for open-ended reasoning, weak for epistemic uncertainty.

This isn’t fully emergent. It’s trainable under specific conditions.

What Works: Frameworks That Teach Judgment

Three research lines from 2025-2026 show genuine progress:

1. J1 and Think-J: Teaching LLM Judges to Think First

The J1 framework (May 2025) treats critical thinking as a learnable skill for LLM-as-a-Judge systems. Instead of generating verdicts immediately, models are trained via reinforcement learning to produce “thinking traces”—internal reasoning before deciding.

Key insight: Judgment quality improves when models explain their reasoning to themselves first. The thinking doesn’t need to be shown to users, but generating it improves outcomes. This mirrors human critical thinking: making your reasoning explicit helps you catch errors.

Think-J extends this with both offline (fixed dataset) and online (interactive) RL, optimizing the judgment reasoning process itself. Early results show these models can serve as reward signals in RLHF pipelines—teaching other models by demonstrating good judgment.

2. Constitutional AI: Pre-Defined Principle Checking

Anthropic’s Constitutional AI (2022) uses chain-of-thought reasoning to help models identify harmful content. The model generates reasoning about whether a response violates principles like “don’t promote violence” or “avoid stereotyping.”

This works because the principles are explicit and verifiable. The model isn’t developing general skepticism—it’s pattern-matching against defined rules. But pattern-matching here is useful: checking “does this response violate principle X?” is mechanical, and transformers excel at mechanical tasks.

Limitation: The model can only critique what’s in the constitution. It won’t spontaneously question whether the constitution itself is flawed, or notice unstated assumptions outside the principle set. It’s skeptical within boundaries, not boundary-questioning.

3. EduThink4AI: Multi-Agent Educational Frameworks

EduThink4AI (July 2025) bridges educational critical thinking theories with LLM system design. Instead of hoping individual models develop critical thinking, the framework distributes it across specialized agents:

  • Questioner Agent: Challenges assumptions
  • Evaluator Agent: Assesses argument quality
  • Synthesizer Agent: Integrates perspectives

This offloads metacognition from individual models (where it’s weak) to system architecture (where it can be designed). No single agent needs full critical thinking—each handles one aspect. Together, they approximate skeptical reasoning.

This is promising because it works around the limitation instead of trying to overcome it. Transformers are good at specialized tasks. Make critical thinking a collection of specialized tasks, and suddenly it’s achievable.

What Doesn’t Work: Hoping for Emergence

The mistake is assuming critical thinking emerges naturally from scale. It doesn’t. Studies on knowledge boundary awareness show mixed results—some models detect knowledge gaps, others confidently hallucinate. Metacognition appears in reasoning models but not base models. Self-correction works for safety (checking against harm principles) but fails for epistemic rigor (genuine doubt about reasoning quality).

Why? Because the training objective doesn’t select for skepticism. Models are rewarded for completing tasks, generating helpful responses, matching human preferences. None of these incentivize self-doubt. In fact, they punish it—“I’m not sure” is less preferred than confident answers, even wrong ones.

Unless you specifically train against this (via frameworks like J1, Constitutional AI, or multi-agent skepticism), you won’t get critical thinking. You’ll get confident completion.

The Metacognitive Gap Persists

Even with dedicated training, LLMs struggle with one key aspect of human critical thinking: genuine metacognitive awareness.

Humans can think about their thinking in real-time. We notice when we’re confused, uncertain, or reasoning poorly. We adjust confidence dynamically based on argument strength. We feel the difference between “I’m sure because I remember” and “I’m sure because it sounds right.”

Transformers don’t have this. They compute confidence from lexical patterns (P(word|context)), not from reasoning about reasoning. A well-trained model can simulate metacognition—generate text that looks like self-doubt—but the underlying confidence scores still come from statistical co-occurrence, not epistemic evaluation.

This is why external verification remains essential. The model can say “I’m uncertain,” but that’s different from being uncertain in a way that updates internal probabilities appropriately.

The Hybrid Solution: Human + AI Critical Thinking

If LLMs can’t fully replicate human critical thinking, what’s the practical path forward?

Design systems where AI does what it does well (specialized skeptical tasks) and humans do what they do well (holistic judgment).

Concretely:

  • Use J1/Think-J style models to verify logical consistency (they’re good at this)
  • Use Constitutional AI to check against defined principles (mechanical and reliable)
  • Use multi-agent frameworks (EduThink4AI) to distribute critical thinking across specialized roles
  • Keep humans in the loop for final judgment when epistemic stakes are high

This isn’t “AI replaces human thinking.” It’s “AI augments human thinking by automating the mechanical parts of skepticism.” Fact-checking, consistency verification, assumption flagging—these are checkable. Overall judgment about whether reasoning is sound? Still human territory.

Why This Matters: The Teachability Ceiling

The teachability of critical thinking reveals something fundamental about transformer architecture: it’s trainable for specific cognitive operations, but not generally meta-cognitively aware.

You can teach a model to think through problems step-by-step (o1, R1). You can teach it to check against principles (Constitutional AI). You can teach it to judge argument quality (J1, Think-J). But you can’t make it spontaneously skeptical the way humans are.

This isn’t a limitation that scale alone will overcome. It’s architectural. Transformers optimize local lexical relationships (attention over token sequences). Metacognition requires evaluating reasoning quality, not just generating plausible text. These are different operations.

The good news: We can work around this through system design. The bad news: Anyone expecting GPT-N to “just get” critical thinking from more parameters is waiting for something that won’t arrive.

Conclusion: Teachable, Not Universal

Can you teach an AI to think critically? Yes—if you’re specific about what “critical thinking” means and design training that directly incentivizes it.

Frameworks like J1, Think-J, Constitutional AI, and EduThink4AI show that skeptical reasoning is learnable when:

  1. Broken into specific operations (checking, verifying, decomposing)
  2. Rewarded explicitly through RL or constitutional principles
  3. Distributed across specialized agents rather than centralized in one model

But this isn’t universal emergence. It’s engineered capability. Without dedicated training, LLMs default to confident completion, not skeptical evaluation.

The teachability ceiling is real. We can train specific critical thinking behaviors, but we can’t make models genuinely metacognitively aware in the way humans are. The hybrid solution—AI for mechanical skepticism, humans for holistic judgment—is likely the most practical path forward for the next several years.

Critical thinking in AI isn’t impossible. It’s just more constrained, more task-specific, and more architecture-dependent than we initially hoped.
